Pynchon here, Pynchon there... Makes me want
to take a closer look at "Chucky" in IV. A  real
elusive character.

Pynchon of course knew about MK Ultra (plus its Hippie offspring); the 
"confession" Jules Siegel detects in "Gravity's Rainbow" is, however, 
all about Pynchon's involvement with Boeing and the 'Bomarc' project. 
Actually he was writing for "Bomarc Service News".

"Pynchon wrote most extensively on the 'Bomarc' winged surface-to-air 
missile, eerily similar to the A-9 that Nazi engineers built to bomb 
New York." (Steven Weisenburger, Cambridge Companion 2012, p. 45).

Since the assumed 'missile gap' turned out to be a myth, and since 
things happening in Vietnam started  looking from month to month more 
and more like a genocide, our author had to do some "karmic 
adjustment", as the term from "Vineland" goes.

And that's the "confession" you can find in "Gravity's Rainbow"!
