Matt Ruff's The Mirage wasn't too bad--an enjoyable read somewhat marred by
the ending but he pulls off the alternate world shtick rather well--United
States of Arabia vs. Christian terrorists based in an Afghan/Iraq like
America-Texas is Kuwait, Baghdad is NYC, etc.

Vladimir Sorokin's The Ice Trilogy I'm afraid isn't very good--I don't
think VS is made to write longer novels (though this one is a trilogy)
Involves the Tunguska event and what the event brought to earth, namely
"ice" which seeks to gather 23,000 blonde hair-blue eyed  individuals to be
reborn and to regroup into light to establish peace and harmony in the
universe once more (and also getting rid of the error that is earth).
