It looks like, in the parts I noted on here today, that Slothrop suspects that the octopus wasn't real, etc., and that the narrator verifies that his suspicions are correct.
In which case, my two listed states of paranoia listed below apply:
Slothrop is 1. paranoid, about the octopus, etc., and he cannot be 2. runaway paranoid, because he's right. In which case, my two terms are of value in a discussion of at least this portion of Pynchon's fiction.
