thanks for the kind words!  Yes, I think filial is another way to view
the relationship developing on the raft.

part of the fun of the book is gawping at the unfamiliar language and
the weird things he has people do, and the double take as you
assimilate the phraseology, misinterpret it on modern terms, and then
it clicks into place in context and all of a sudden there's a new
byword in one's mind.
