An interesting exercise, but a reader does not identify the
distinctive prose style when given a passage or excerpt or even a
sentence, a clause, or even a phrase from an author....when the
passage ....is taken from a text the reader has read.
So the test is not assessing one's ability to recognize the prose
style, but the text of an author; the style, is one element the test
taker may use to identify the author, but some test takers will
identify the author by recognizing other elements of the given text.
To test one's ability to recognize an author's style, we would need to
ensure that each test taker has never encounted the passage used to
test the reader's ability to recognize a style.
So, if we used the opening sentence of GR to test Pynchon fans, we
would not be testing the ability to recognize an author's text by
prose style alone.
An interesting exercise: write a passage in Pynchon-Style. No cheating, Wanda.
