In Memoirs of a Survivor (1974), she would describe this [Cartesian]  rationalism 
as an intelligence that could "make a rocket fly to the moon or weave artificial
dress materials out of the by-products of petroleum."


Cartesian rationalism was slammed six ways to Monday by many English writers
(and others) shows one Patricia Waugh in The Oxford Companion to the British and Irish 

Novel 1945-2000....
