If history is marked by war, then Reef/Yashmeen/Ljubica are outside history
here as '[t]hey [creep] south, in the partial vacuum ...' etc. There is a
response from nature ('Even the crows were silent now', 964) and orchards
see fruit replaced by refugees: we might be reminded of Kit and Dally in a
deserted paprika field on 913. The passage ends with the wine harvest 'just
... brought in': the war is outside nature, which waits for no one. Place
names are listed but remain disconnected.
