History really moves when the traditionally most civilized section of
the population joins as coequeals with those without whose labor

This happened, of course, as CLR James, a great student of Melville,
when the New Englanders, representing the longestAmerican line of
lawful sovereinty, allied itself with the plantation chattel. But
Bartleby is not saved. No more than Pip is saved. Things are pretty
much the same now. As the Hector reminds Zoyd, all are lonely people
now, and no one has saved them.

On the bright side, I have to admit it's getting better since ...
