but of course, if the Church aligned itself *against* the rich and
powerful, one might expect some unexpected side effects from that as
well...

still, it's like in The Flying Nun, that Sister Bertrille had this
amazing ability and the Mother Superior was *always* squelching her
and not letting her display it and it just doesn't seem right, does
it?  a-and even Catherine Laboure had to promulgate the Miraculous
Medal anonymously - the old stuffy hidebound hierarchy seemingly
against anything fun, new, innovative and willing to trot out the
instruments of torture ("but it moves!") and even burn poor Bruno at
the stake for which I do not believe the Church hierarchy has yet
expressed any remorse, has it?
