i suppose i should read the context on that, but...
it makes me think of

a) the importance of dinner parties in politics
b) the importance of parties in Pynchon (the house party v begins with
and the sudwest party in a key chapter of same; also the house party
in m&d)

c) did jefferson mean that he encouraged everybody to meet everybody
so that the formation of cliques by the mere chance of sitting near
each other (and then those cliques going on to rule various corners of
the world...) was less inevitable?
