Chabon mentions Pynchon

saw him read at KGB in the east village when IJ came out. I sorta
remember feeling bad for the guy; didnt seem he liked all the
publicity. "John Billy" is my favorite thing he wrote. and a number of
bits in IJ (the junkie tranny on the T with her baby)
