Book on reading fiction

It's about symbolism and representational characters, Biblical allusions,  intertextuality and the like.   It's pretty interesting and easy enough to read - my copy has plenty of underlinings and marginalia soI guess I was engaged and enjoying myself. (heh)    Looks like a couple places I thought the idea is a bit overdone - I mean,  sometimes a cigar is just a cigar?  - But overall I'd say it's worth the read.  (I think I must have read it in 2005 or so.)
