I'm in the "GR was the peak" camp.  To me it's just plainly evident
and obvious.  GR has so many stretches of beautiful and extremely
complex prose, all in service to its major themes (not just as filler
like it seems are in the later works - especially AtD).  The writing's
better.  The structures are better and deeper.  The characters are all
better.
