interesting passage...extended metaphor, the midwest as a great sea (i
started to type "see" and isn't that a catholic term for a
bishopric...0-:) and each town, or even house, conceived of as an
island (a-and midwesterners are often conceived of as insular)


the actual livestock in the landscape is likened to fishes in the sea

mention is made of sharks preying, and of course the commodity
exchanges or their precursors were in KC or Chicago brokered the
slaughter, and the slaughterhouses literally performed it...in a
feeding frenzy...

...which relates to the capitalist growth economy which is the
objective fiscal correlative of a baby boom...


finally, next, the girls who, i can't help but notice, are seen as
yearning individuals
great emphasis is placed on their yearning
- (probably because seen through merle's own yearning eyes)
