from Rushdie's new memoir though we've heard of this one already. just
starting the new Joyce biography before I read the Rushdie. I really
liked Robert Hughes' book on Rome (though not so much his views on
Mussolini though again when compared with the crazed Roman rulers of
antiquity and the maniac popes who came after I guess its not so
surprising), Benito just sort've fits right in) which came out last
year and I just finished. his brief descriptions of the Trastevere
neighborhood there sounds like some members of the Tristero were
locals.

'Writer Thomas Pynchon appears at a dinner hosted by Sonny Mehta,
publisher at Knopf, “looking exactly as Thomas Pynchon should look. He
was tall, wore a red-and-white lumberjack shirt and blue jeans, had
Albert Einstein white hair and Bugs Bunny front teeth.”
