I started college in 1965 thinking I wanted to be a journalism major. I
read the only Pynchon novel at that time on my own as a freshman. Then I
went to a bookstore over the summer and got Lot 49. I dropped out of school
for a year and came back as an English Major. Then I got drafted and
afterwards returned to school. When I was a senior Gravity's Rainbow was
published. I caught a lot of flack from professors and other students at a
wine and cheese party in the English department when I stated with
considerable force that Pynchon was the only living American author worth
studying. I'm sure most if not all of them had not even heard of Pynchon
back then. Well I got my English degree and worked in Civil Service for 30
years and am now retired.

PS: I STILL think P is the only living American author worth studying in
college!
