A bit about Oyster Bay

Interesting!

We were over to Teddy's House Tuesday, it was all scaffolds and blue
tarps; construction is again common here, public and private, as the
great recession has finally come to close. There was an enormous
Turkey in the parking lot at Sagamore, he was puffing himself up
against the curious with cameras, protecting his ugly lady bird who
squawked from behind a tree. Walked about the Planting Fields. It was
empty. The roses, the seasonal draw, had been recently clipped, but
the place was as pleasant and quiet as ever. Nothing much has changed
in Oyster Bay. A lot of trees are gone. But as we drove through Cold
Spring and Northport, to Eaton's Neck and over the bridge, the density
of commerce, construction, tourists was suffocating. Not as sad to see
as Huntington, a Disneyland, or sadder still the Southern Beaches.
God! I had not thought that Sandy had done that much damage. At FINS,
the Fire Island National Sea Shore, I cried. It is gone. Pardon the
cliché, but it looked like bombs had been dropped on the place.
Construction there too, new boardwalks...the long push of sand, an
artificial dune looked like the skeletal spine of the extinct beaches.
Not been to the Hamptons or Montauk yet. Did see the photos the
governor took from his fly over, not a pretty picture. When I was a
kid I would ride my bike through Oyster Bay, Cold Spring, down to
Bethpage and even out to Jones Beach. It was an adventure; the Indian
Spirits haunted our rides. Alls changed from that, but Oyster Bay
seemed much the same.
