Browsing in Ralph Freedman's biography of Rilke, I read this:
"This wave of creation [more Duino Elegies] was ushered in by a peculiar
prose work--the last extensive prose he was to write. It was a fictional epistle, a 
so-called Letter from the Young Worker to an unnamed poet designated as
"V.", actually the late Emile Verhaeren. ........it reversed the relation between this 
world and the "Open" that lies beyond....p.494
