"Jazz is a dangerous thing," Ian Dury sez in there - but so is category
anxiety, e.g. that displayed by the Pulitzer Prize board in 1974. 'Aja' was
kind of a touchstone for me when it came out: I was loving Elvis Costello
and Sex Pistols and Ramones and Television too, but couldn't believe the
reflexive, tribal way that many fellow fan of those blew off 'Aja' as
easy-listening Extruded Fusion Product - at least at first.

Fagen's more-jaded-than-thou lounge lizard persona has always been as
keenly, brainily calculated as those of Bowie or Waits. Like Costello, he
and Becker know exactly what they want from rock, jazz, blues, and pop, and
make it new. (How many apt, seamless  quotations from, say, Horace Silver's
great 'Song for My Father' and 'Cape Verdean Blues' can you find in the SD
canon?)
