When Pynchon names, it has significance....it is a German name at least, if Joseph's fascinating associations do not convince and.........we know about GErmans in TRP's books.

Seems a shame that just one asshole no matter how bad can ruin a name.  Fortunately people are good at choosing or inventing names. I've never met a Genghis, Adolf, Nero or Benito, but I think Horst might still be around.
