This information like others she got from Raul Hilberg's pioneer study
"The Destruction of the European Jews". Actually Arendt borrowed a lot
from Hilberg without giving adequate credit, which made him, especially
since she had academically evaluated against his project, furious for
the rest of his life. Even at the conference in Germany he attended a
couple of weeks before his death this led to a little scandal. After
someone had asked about Arendt, Hilberg said "Ich hasse diese Frau!" (I
hate this woman) and then completely freaked out. After that the
conference was over although additional panels had been planed.
