> The author veers off on a few Brenda Starr riffs before getting to the
Vinelandish heart of this novel, with the easily recognizable communication
of families long accustomed to weirdness and just happy to see they've
managed to survive. Someone needs to extrapolate on "Black-orchid serum",
whatever that is.

Hmmm, the sidelong way you mentioned that...Brenda Starr will never be the
same for me. The explanation or explication of black orchid serum would
call for literary theory, etymology, post colonialism, queer theory,
Eldridge Cleaver...

Her mystery man was gone an awful long time, but he finally returned with
the goods! Probably the 2nd coolest thing Gerald Ford ever did was send
congratulations on the occasion of Brenda and Basil's wedding.

A-and remember when Hank, who always looked like an acorn with her little
beret, quit smoking? Oh the times, they are a-changing! Then darn
Doonesbury with his power play forced a lot of comics off the page...but I
can find Funky Winkerbean and Broom Hilda and Tank McNamara on the internet
now, though nudged by your words I learn that the Brenda Starr vehicle's
been decommissioned along with Annie!

Bonus find: apparently this guy Josh reads the funnies and makes fun of
them, he does it pretty well, too...
