pp.984--985   'maquina loca'....Frank lights some fuses in his locomotive and
sets it in its collision course with the soldiers'.....

But he (almost) can't jump off...Frank's certainty that jumping or not jumping
was no longer the point, he belonged to what was happening......which was
"speed, air rushing, the smell of smoke and steam, time whose substance grew more condensed
as each tick came faster and faster.....the mutual horns shrieking...the little engine shuddering in its frenzy [Little Engine That Could?]...
a single great chord that gathered in the entire moment.........

Death, eh?...almost the moment of, but saved by a
bug up his nose that brought him back to the day.........

And modernity with Marinetti's Futurism described a lot like that
as with The Juggernaut earlier as well..........

Frank, in this act, "belonged to what was happening"....the real bad shit of modernity...........
I, like Alice have a hard time seeing---here at least--Pynchon on the side of violence in the Traverse
clan thru Frank....
