The whole sexual revolution thing goes back further than hippiedom. Henry
Miller's quote about the social milieu around the American response to the
Russian Revolution and the era leading up to it in Warren Beatty's movie
Reds, says a lot. I can't recollect it entirely verbatim, but the words at
the center of the quote were, "there was just a whole lot o' fuckin' goin'
on then." The intellectual 'bohemians' of the time were the direct social
ancestors of the hippies and the cheesebags of the disco era. Sexual
freedom at the turn of the 20th C was the same sexist abuse that was so
popular in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. Sexual anarchy implies women's
freedom also, but it's general explicit conduct ends with women's freedom
to say 'no' before being compelled to comply with a horny man's desire. I'm
sure there must be work done on Pynchon's portrayal of sex and his female
characters' relative freedoms in the doings? I'm thinking Geli Tripping is
the only real female sexual anarchist of the lot, and she's a witch (i.e.,
an herbalist). I suppose Yashmeen comes pretty close, too, though.
