Texas writer and bookman Larry McMurtry was President of PEN for a few years in the 90s. In his Literary Life: A
Second Memoir he speaks of the major political division of PEN authors. Those who wanted it to grow
and those who wanted it to stay small, the Little Englanders---some folks who lived on 11th Street or had or might.
These would include Kirkpatrick and Faith Sale, Grace Paley, Donald Barthelme in his NY years......
We know about the Sales' and TRP and we are pretty sure TRP lived in the same apartment building in his Village years.
When he speaks of his shelf of writers 'whom Louis Menand calls "post-modernists", Gass, Coover, Barth, Barthelme.
Pynchon, Vonnegut and a few others", he says the one true masterpiece is V.!
