In a book I've mentioned before, H. Stuart Hughes' Consciousness and Society
1880 to whenver, I recently read a bit on the Class (or Writers) of 1905.......
They included Gide and Proust, the former of whom rejected Swann's Way
when he worked for a publishing house but whom Hughes speaks about as, if not
a writer as great as Proust, a writer who courageously explored his inner life on paper
in the time when Freud was trying to map it out 'scientifically'..........

Born well off, but rejecting that superficial world, a deep moralistic Protestant who turned on Protestantism (but not quite the
Protestant Ethic and a new "morality"),  married but gay late....and more

Hughes' whole chapter, which goes on to include Mann and Hesse's explorations of the psychology of the self

reminded me once again of the historical importance (re psychology, sexuality, constrictive Puritan values exploded)
in the Yashmeen and her lovers section of AtD.

Hughes also informs me that Max Weber, depth charge critic of society,  spoke out in defense of Germany's "values" as worth defending in that War to End All Wars.
