Soviets were well-known for using women in combat during the war. You
should read about the famous snipers at Stalingrad. One woman with many
kills later visited the US; all the press wanted to talk about were makeup
and stuff. she was bewildered.
The Night Witches do appear briefly I believe in the novel The Kindly Ones.
They were incredibly brave
