Paris Review: When you wrote “A Shower of Gold” did you intend to satirize the new values as represented by all these philosophy-prone people?
Barthelme: Not philosophy-prone but jargon-prone. Around the time that was written, a debased Sartrean language was on every lip. This was a long time ago, almost two decades ago. Peterson’s barber in the story has written four books called The Decision To Be and the television people are all babbling madly about authenticity. There was a huge amount of this kind of thing collecting in the air conditioning vents, the elephants were throwing it in the air and taking baths in it. . . . The piece was not about values but about language. You could do the same story today and substitute the current vocabulary and very little of the structure of the story would have to be changed. Call it “The Lacanthrope.”
