Re: that "real and deeply personal themes", what I kept thinking about
during casting announcements was how many seem to have "colourful"
histories with substances or moments when the media delighted in
public burnouts or blow-ups. Robert Downey Jnr was obvious there, but
Phoenix as well, Penn I think, surely Del Toro and Wilson have
inhaled, even Witherspoon had her DUI meltdown recently. So that extra
layer of extratextual meaning there, in which Hollywood eats its
own...
