Translation makes us attend to these things -- but even within any one
language, 99.9% of the time we sail unaware over reefs and shoals of the
obscurely idiomatic, arbitrary, historically contingent.
As I used to tell my students in writing classes about spelling, grammar,
syntax and usage: "It's English; it doesn't have to make sense."
