Paul Goodman, self-proclaimed anarchist responded to a "liberal' who in 1961 criticized
his position on sex and pornography invoking a 'founder' of liberalism, JS Mill. Won't rehash it here but
this is interesting: Goodman argues he would affirm BOTH freedom and organic [natural] health 'as absolute goods"--no
binary straightjacketing for him---when
the opponent, Mr. Lichtman, says liberalism would make him choose.
But here are the words I am doing this post for: "This is why some of us are anarchists; we do not
put our faith in princes and constitutions. As anarchists, we affirm the Bill of Rights because it is one of
OUR historical achievements, basic to proceeding further. By proceeding to further inititation---including
free sexual expression [personal and in 'porn']---we shall degenerate to mere 'society', a collection of persons
without the community of human beings."
He ends by saying some of us liberals have chosen to call ourselves anarchists.
Great German sociologists made famous the terms Gemeinshaft vs. Gesellshaft for the society/community distinction
in his last sentence.
