First of all, imagine going to bed one night in Tennessee and waking up the
next morning to discover that you live in Georgia. Imagine all the money
you'd have to spend just buying new fan gear, or the effort it would take
to change your allegiance from Smokey the coonhound to UGA IX. Checkerboard
end zones exchanged for The Hedges? A nightmare.


Second — and, yes, even more serious than football — is that we're going to
be seeing more of this, between states and between countries, as water becomes
a more precious

Of course, to confront this problem you have to confront the fact that
we're doing a fine job wrecking the planet in so many ways, but that would
require a general consensus that science is good and that much of what is
consumed through our mass media is bunk. It would require states to stop
wasting time resisting the imaginary UN plan to steal all our golfs. It
would require less demagoguery on the issue of whether's it's smart to run
a pipeline full of tar sands through or near the Oglalla Aquifer. It would
require that we accept the fact that one thing does, in fact, occasionally,
lead to another. I'd say we have better odds taking the whole problem to
UGA.
