Interesting. As blogger Jones says, it's mostly 20th-century modernist
fiction -- and I'm betting that was more or less the course for which it was
Barthelme's syllabus,  or the context for those recommendations.  "Essential
for a literary education" seems to be an unwarranted add-on by Jones in
titling the post, and IMHO way over the top.
