When a major believer in the book at Simon & Schuster, a female working there from 1939,---
"if we can't print 7,500; [was to be 5,000], why am I here?"--sent reading copies to all kinds of writers and influence-peddlers
she got back a quote from comic novelist (and about soldiers, even) Evelyn Waugh which said, paraphrased,
There are things in this book you as a woman should not have read and, although there are some funny bits, it is
formless but I will give you a quote: paraphrase: This book is funny but reading it will aid and abet all enemies of
the US...wittier and more expansive in actuality but I ain't looking it up. Quote not used, of course.

Decades later, Neo-con liberal turncoat mind Norman Podhoretz rescinded his early praise in a Commentary
reconsideration in which he said about the same at essayistic length.

Self-criticism shouldn't work and sometimes it doesn't.
