And again, this is the author of "The Crying of Lot 49." This novel  
repeats/embellishes/does a number of Harlem Globetrotters styled pass- 
off hijinks with the older Novella in the later, bulkier work. At the  
end of the story [like Wagner's ring "right back where we started"],  
we might know who the bad guys are, but linking actions/persons  
directly to anything is as impossible tracking something as it exits  
Deeparcher. The difference being Oedipa leaving home and home more or  
less returning to Maxine. But the mystery at the core?
