Dickens and Hitchcock were mainstream in their lifetimes. Think about
the former's reading tours; and the latter made movies in Hollywood
for nearly 40 years. (Maxine might have two of them in mind when she
muses, what Ingrid Bergman or Grace Kelly would do under Cary Grant's
beam.)
