In Gatsby, we meet a couple, and their photographs, of Montauk etc.
and, that voice if Nick's, that Western nostalgia come from the tools
and hardware (his wealth is made in tools and hardware in Bob Dylan
Country) to the abstract and soft wear world of derivatives, of Wall
street saturated with booze, is behind Maxine'sw, at a distance, where
Pynchon, a Long Island boy, whispers in the trees left standing, no
cry from the pine barrens, a lamentation for the lost Island. Montauk,
where I lived for five years, is called The End. The End or Death of
art in Montauk.
