Maybe with a fictional founding psychoanalyst, Pynchon
was just getting a joke off about the institutionalization
of the discipline? On Freud himself or his patients?

article on Otto Rank:
.” Emotion is the cause of neurotic disorder. Increases in emotion, according to Freud, are unpleasurable. Cure, for Freud, means analyzing, "working through" and eventually uprooting the emotions of the patient, “like the draining of the Zuyder Zee” (Freud, S.E., 22:80).
NORMAL emotions? like the simple stages of life put down in BE?
