73: Lucas “buying into strange [financial] instruments understood only
by sociopathic quants” – foreshadowing, probably more apt for the
2000s’ mortgage/CDO bubble than the late-1990s dotcom bubble.
Actually, strange instruments, what we used to call esoteric stuff
dominated the credit markets from the early 1980s through, the dotcom
craze and the collapse of the credit markets in 2008 and still do.
Equity, as I'm sure you know, is a fairly simple affair when compared
with other strange financials, and these are debt not equity
instruments. And equity is, rather tiny tots and small potatoes next
to the strange debt instruments that have been created over the last
40 years. So, I don't read it at foreshadowing, but as accurate,
though, as is obvious enough, Pynchon does his research but is not an
expert.
