There is a detailed article by Adam Entous in the Wall Street Journal who spent time in the region and goes into detail about the involvement of Bandar, Petraus and the CIA. Also The alternet article does in fact name several sources.  But the WSJ article makes it very clear that the US and its "friends" have been aiding advising and helping arm the rebel forces.
