It's just a stupid, stupid criticism. Pynchon writes many many readable 
and simple sentences. The difficulty in reading pynchon is not at the 
sentence level (as it may be for say DFW) but at the level of following 
the narrative, as he drifts from present day conversation, to flashback, 
to commentary from others, without a lot of explicit syntax telling the 
reader where he is.

"A screaming comes across the sky." Probably Pynchon's most famous 
sentence. Is it not readable?
