my parents' generation, and the situation has hardly changed with
mine. College kids not yet numbed between their auditory orifices by a
ceaseless poison slurry of Jimmy Buffet, Fleetwood Mac, Phish, and
32-minute "covers" of Fire On The goddamn Mountain still belly-stagger
blearily up to the digital juke every night, ten min to last call, in
the hopes of inciting one last singalong, never mind the flinty gaze
of the bartender as she jams a rag in the neck of a bottle bacardi and
fingers her Bic.
