What I scanned of the first ch. read like the most mellifluous Cormac
McCarthy, but given what little I've (reluctantly) learned of DFW's
bio, it's doubtful I'll ever give it a sitdown. Have known too many
folks with substance issues; while the prose is gorgeous, it's a
pained beauty, knowing the author was trying & failing to find his own
solutions. Knowing the outcome of his life subtracts from my
willingness to engage with his not-unautobiographical body of work. A
shame. I found his short stories stunning.
