NP: but " of the light"

In a little piece on Peter Matthiessen, he sez the fishermen and the fish both come ' of the light'. 
A perception some--many?---artists arrive at who love the natural world almost religiously. ( TRP thematizes this in Against the Day, I think) 

He is one of the few--only?--major writers who earned his living for years as a commercial fisherman, and I can easily imagine him being the last ( from the United States anyway).
