Mumford points out that Melville began MOBY DICK IN 1851 the year " industry and science were announcing their triumphs in that great cockcrow of the Crystal Palace in London" 

& checking out Mumford's intro to Samuel Butler's EREWHON online, I learn that the original title of that work was EREWHON, or OVER THE RANGE. !! ( cf. AtD's opening section)
