Loving coffee and Pynchon, I have long been fascinated by his use of
it throughout his work. One of the "little'
human things--not a Big Question-- that are not often remarked
on:...coffee, the Enlightenment drink, historians say; coffee, the
sacramental drink
of our secular age, argue a couple academics in a cultural book.
And, as Morris is always saying, so 'ambiguous' as to TRP's attitude
toward, yes? Just a cultural/historic fact, even a pleasurable "good',
with other food and drink? Or another
aspect of the sped-up 'modernity' he ain't too fond of? It does speed
us up, right?
