In Germany, Berlin, around the turn of the 20th century. One of Walter Benjamin's aunts would bring out a cube-encased facsimile of a mine for him when a child. Complete with worker figures. ( No indication from the text whether this was a one-off handmade item ( by a crafts -person or artist) or a manufactured item.
