Subject: Borges
This morning, and actually during the whole holiday break, I've been reading Borges, including a wonderful book by Norman Thomas Di Giovanni, "The Lesson of the Master", about his time working with Borges as translator and collaborator. As I was finishing a chapter on Borges' ideas of "Self and selves", my friend, who is a great drummer (he has worked with George Benson and Carmen McRae, to name just two) and who actually introduced me to Borges work many years ago, called, and we had a long conversation, during which he told me this story.
He has a friend from Argentina, also a drummer, who actually knew Borges, and used to take him for walks. During these walks Borges would tell him stories. Borges asked him what he did, and he said he was a drummer, playing mostly with society bands in Buenos Aires. Borges reportedly said, "Well, society music is fine, but I prefer the blues", and proceeded to sing a blues for him!
My friend has a book autographed by Borges when Borges gave a lecture at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.

On another note, I was out at my local Irish Pub on New Year's Eve, enjoying some Stone IPA and admiring the waitress, how young and pretty and, most likely, far removed from my experience as a musician, etc., when I heard some Johnny Cash coming from the jukebox, and turned around to find her standing at the magic box. When she came by, I asked her if she had played the Johnny Cash song, and she said she had indeed. I remarked on how much I liked his music, my father being a huge country music fan as I was growing up. She said that she was also a fan of "real country music, like Hank, and after all, I'm a Carter". I asked what she meant, and she said June Carter was her grandmother, and Roseanne Cash her aunt! Small world indeed.
Happy New Year!
