Lewis Mumford started his publishing with a book on Herman Melville, ya might not know. 
During that rediscovery that canonized him. 
Also wrote a couple of good books on America in the late 1800s, which 
I might bet TRP has read.
 
He also wrote a short, book in 1939 called Men Must Act
which elaborated at book length on a controversial piece he wrote in The New Republic
arguing that America needed to do something re Hitler. It was controversial,
of course, because many progressives then (called liberals then) were pretty
fully anti-involvement of any kind. 
 
Early in Men Must Act, he speaks of the State of Siege in the world. Remember the phrase
in Against the Day?
