It should be added, however, that not every carnivalesque act is
emancipatory, because sometimes, it can disinhibit reactive desires arising
from the system. Bakhtinian theory is sometimes used to defend texts which
arguably reproduce dominant values, but do so in an ‘ironic’ or ‘humorous’
way. This happens because of the layers of prohibitions: the system often
promotes something (such as sexism), then inhibits its unconstrained
expression.
